We want to raise the question why we still, in year 2009, get printed Yellow Pages to our front door?
We think Yellow Pages* function better as a door stopper than a source of information, and we illustrate this by making it into a user driven art project, where we all are the artists and a part of the project.
Look around, maybe you have a Yellow Pages laying around. Don’t let these printed bricks stay waste. Tell us what you think about them, or just dig in, start create with them – check gallery or movie below for more inspiration.
* Yellow Pages was a directory used in the pre-internet era.
[yellow collection] in depth.
[yellow collection] is a collective response to the rediculous distribution of the printed Yellow Pages, all over the globe. We’d like to highlight the issue of our resources; economical, human & natural. Most people find these pages quite unusable, and meaningless, so we thought we could make better use of them by creating art and installations, movies and constructions.
Since nobody really uses the Yellow Pages in the way intended – meaning looking for information – we started thinking of other ways of using these catalogues. After all, they are perfect building blocks among many things.
A motivator for us was the action paradigm. We got tired of people complaining. What is the use of sitting at home, getting pissed off over something, if you do not turn it into action? Real change seldomly come from just talking.
It can also be seen as a form of Hacktivism. We are hacking the institution of the Yellow Pages. We do this by taking the Yellow Pages to create art. We are using the existing infrastructure within the system, to change the very same system, by redefining the usage of the catalogues. By redefining the usage of the catalogues, we can hopefully change the norm.
It would no longer make sense to print these catalogues, if they are used in other ways than looking for information. Would you pay for an ad in a catalogue that people only use to play with? (Btw, firms are today paying for ads in Yellow Pages, that nobody uses – hence, we want to point out to them that they are literary littering with their marketing budgets)
- or maybe we are just full of shit? Maybe we are only playing without any reason, without any purpose? (But you know what – it is really fun.) Since this is a user generated art project, we can’t tell you exactly what it is about. We can only tell you our own narratives, our own version of why we are doing this. Get involved and create your own purpose/meaning for why you want to create.
Whether you are a designer, architect, art director, hacker, filmmaker, photographer, fashion guru or just a creative fly girl / b-boy don’t hesitate to join in, be a part of the creative crowd.
It all comes down to this; what would you create if you had:
1 catalogue…
100 catalogues…..
1000 catalogues……..
10.000.000 catalogues……………. as was printed this year in Sweden.
